Safety Aspects of Delhi Metro

The following article is about the various safety measures taken by Delhi Metro in the Metro Trains and Escalators.

Delhi Metro has not only made a name for itself in the field of punctuality and discipline but also in the safety of the passengers. The commitment of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) under the able guidance and leadership of the director, E. Sreedharan to prioritise the safety of the passengers or the premises in the vicinity of the Metro Stations is laudable. It is unimaginable to realise the magnitude of damage in a crowded city like Delhi as a consequence to breach of safety measures in Delhi Metro.

Safe Escalators

Protection against over speeding and detection of a missing step are some of the features of Escalators used in Delhi Metro. A tray has also been provided for to collect substances like human hair, dust, water and oil.

One of the best features that should be a priority in all the escalators used in India is a guard feature that deflects loose clothing from getting trapped in the escalators. This comes as a welcome feature mostly for ladies who wear saris and salwar kameez.

Emergency Stop Switches are provided at bottom, centre and top of every escalator to stop the escalator from moving in case of an untoward incident.

Safe Coaches

Technology has its own charm and usefulness. Delhi Metro has made every possible use of technology in its quest for safe travel.

Automatic Doors that will not let the Metro trains proceed if the doors are not closed and locked is the ultimate feature that makes travelling in a Metro train safe and secure. Moreover, in case a door of the train opens by accident while the Metro train is in motion, the train will come to a stand still irrespective of the location of the train.

The risk of a inferno is also reduced dramatically due to use of materials that are not readily flammable.

The Metro trains also have an Emergency Evacuation Facility through the emergency front door.

The trains have been equipped with facilities that allows a passenger to speak with the driver in case of an emergency.

Emergency announcements by a driver or operation control centre in a train can be done too.

There is also a provision of illumination and ventilation in the trains in case of power supply failure.
