Madhubala has acted in a lot of films in Bollywood. Mughal-e Azam is one of the greatest movies of Hindi Film Industry in which Madhubala performed in lead role as 'Anarkali'.

Beginning Of Acting Career of Madhubala
Madhubala began her acting career in Hindi films at the age of 9. In 1942, she made her acting debut in the movie 'Basant' as a child artist. The movie was successful at box office. Then she appeared as child artist in few other movies like 'Mumtaz Mahal', 'Pujari', 'Khubsurat Duniya', 'Phulwari', 'Mere Bhagwan' etc.
Madhubala's Films As Lead Actress
In 1947, when Madhubala was 14 years old, she appeared in a lead role in the movie 'Neel Kamal', opposite Raj Kapoor. Though the movie failed at box office, Madhubala received positive response for her performance in this movie. In next 2-3 years, She appeared in some more films like 'Lal Dupatta', 'Desh Sewa', 'Amar Prem', 'Singaar' etc. Madhubala was in her adolescence and she was growing beautiful. Hindi film Industry got a beautiful and talented actress as Madhubala in that period. In 1949, the film 'Mahal' released in which Madhubala was cast in opposite Ashok Kumar. 'Mahal' was the biggest hit of the year and Madhubala became the heartthrob of the audience. Madhubala was only 16 at that time.
Madhubala became the demand of film producers and directors in during 1950s. As Madhubala's family was suffering from financial problems, she also tried to work in as many films as possible. She signed all films she was offered, without giving priority to the importance of her role, for which she was criticized by many film critics. She appeared in about 24 four movies within a period of only four years during her career as a film heroine. Some of the movies in which she acted during early 1950s are 'Pardes', 'Nirala', 'Hanste Aansoo', 'Madhubala', 'Beqasoor', 'Badal', 'Aaram', 'Nadaan', 'Sangdil', 'Armaan' etc. Later she realized this thing and looked for challenging roles in some good films.
Madhubala proved her acting talent by performing versatile roles in different films. 'Badal', 'Sangdil', 'Tarana', 'Mr and Mrs 55' were some of her notable movies in which her performances received good response. Her performance in the song 'Ayiye Meherbaan' in the movie 'Howrah Bridge' is still remembered.
During 1958-1960, Madhubala gave some hit movies like 'Kal Hamara Hai', Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi', 'Kalapani', Barsat Ki Raat'. In 1960, she acted in the most famous movie of Bollywood, Mughal-e-Azam. The film created history breaking all the records of Indian Film Industry. Madhubala's performance in this movie in the role of 'Anarkali' was her biggest achievement in her career. She was highly praised by critics and gained enormous popularity for her work in 'Mughal-e-Azam'.
Due to her illness, she appeared in very few movies in 1960s. Her movies Half Ticket (1962) and Sharabi (1964) made above average business. In 1966, madhubala worked in the movie 'Chalak' in opposite Raj Kappor, but she could not complete her work due to the deterioration in her heath. The movie did not release. Madhubala's last released movie was 'Jwala' which was her only colour film. Though 'Jwala' was filmed in 1n 1950s, it was released in 1971, after two years of Madhubala's death(1969).
In the 22 years (from 1942 to 1964) of her acting career, Madhubala acted in more than 70 films.
